Letter from the Editor:
Problems in the school district

In each issue, the Editor-in-Chief writes an editorial: the Letter from the Editor. I utilize this platform to address important local issues and provide solutions. For my first Letter from the Editor, I addressed the conflict occurring between the Clarke County School District Superintendent and Board of Education. This was a local issue that affected our readers, and I believed it was important to address the tension head on.

Letter from the Editor:
Black history in Athens

For my second editorial of the year, I wrote about a new mural in Downtown Athens that celebrated the town's Black history. This editorial accompanied a community news story in the variety section of the magazine, which included more in-depth information about the process of the mural's creation. As Editor-in-Chief, I have been intentional about considering when we can publish "sister stories" in order to accompany an opinion article with a news story to provide more in-depth context.

Boiling Point: Voter Suppression

As Managing Editor, I had an editorial column in our magazine called "Boiling Point". In the first issue, my editorial was on the topic of voter suppression, which was a timely issue because the magazine came out shortly before the Georgia gubernatorial election, in which their were many allegations of voter suppression. This was a topic I felt strongly about and wanted to inform the community about before the election.

Boiling Point: Democrats in the South

For my second column of the year, I wrote about lessons Democrats could learn from the recent midterm elections about running successful campaigns in the South. I did extensive research into the history of Democrats in the South, and compiled many statistics and information about the midterm elections in order to effectively argue my point.

Boiling Point: Romantic Comedies

In the third issue, I chose to write my column on a lighter topic compared to my previous political articles. This required me to get in a different frame of mind for my writing process and to conduct a different form of research for the article. At first, it was a challenge to change my writing genre so drastically, but ultimately I grew to enjoy it and appreciate the article for pushing me outside of my comfort zone.

Blog: A novice yogi

Even as Editor-in-Chief, I have worked to expand my repertoire and write different types of journalistic articles, even and especially those which I am not required to do on a day-to-day basis. This blog was a personal story, which gave me further experience outside of my former niche as a news writer. I also chose to create a map to embed in the website as a multimedia element.

Boiling Point: Women's colleges

For my final Boiling Point column of the year, I argued in support of women's colleges. I chose this topic because it was timely as most seniors were making their college decisions, and because it was a topic I felt passionately about. By this point in the year, I felt confident with editorial writing, and this one took me much less time than previous articles.

Review: The boldest show of 2017

This review, which won first place for review writing from the Southern Interscholastic Press Association, developed out of a genuine desire to share my thoughts on the empowering show "The Bold Type" and to step put of my comfort zone because I had rarely written reviews. I embedded a Spotify playlist of the soundtrack and also created a "which character are you?" quiz to make the review more engaging and interactive.

Lost voices of sexual misconduct

This editorial was not part of my column, but was simply an additional assignment I took on because it was a topic I felt strongly about. It was one of the first editorials I wrote, and it helped me develop my opinionated voice.

Politics are in vogue

I wrote this op-ed because I felt strongly about it and believed it was relevant to a high school audience because I was writing about Teen Vogue -- a magazine marketed towards people of high school age. This was one of my first experiences with opinion-based writing, and it reveals the immense growth in my writing since then.
