Social media promotion

These ODYSSEY Instagram posts are examples of how I use our large social media following to promote articles I write. In this case, I wrote an editorial about voter suppression and posted about the voter registration deadline and did a SCENE with a student who had just registered. Each of these not only provides important information to our followers, but also increases the likelihood of those who see the posts to read my editorial.

Magazine distribution

When we receive the copies of a new magazine, I am intentional about making a detailed distribution plan. This helps ensure good organization and helps the magazine get to as many people as possible. In the image on the right, I have detailed my Issue 2 distribution plan, which includes components for handing out the magazine in school, as well as mailing to subscribers.

Subscriptions

Each year I reach out to family, friends and community members to attempt to sell ODYSSEY subscriptions. I have to conduct myself in a professional manner and do my best to increase the subscription base of our magazine. I have sold about 20 subscriptions each year I have been in ODYSSEY which has been a valuable experience to develop my financial and marketing skills.

Capitol Corner

For my senior year of high school, I was selected to join Georgia State Representative Spencer Frye's Legislative Fellowship. My various duties, including researching bills in the State House and speaking with high-profile politicians, have been much easier because of my experiences in ODYSSEY. I wrote an article for Rep. Frye's website about voter purging in Georgia, and I utilized many of my journalistic writing and researching skills to successfully publish this piece.

Carolina Journalism Institute

During the summer of 2017 I decided to attend the Carolina Journalism Institute in order to further develop my journalistic skills. While at the program, I spent time with a refugee resettlement program and ultimately wrote a story about their work which won "Best Story" from the CJI evaluators.

Editor's journal about expanding our audience

This year, I have been very conscious of the importance of creating content that is representative of our community. This editor's journal includes my reflections after a discussion with our social media team about expanding our social media outreach and representing the diversity of our school. This journal also includes my reflection on a full-staff brainstorm for our third magazine, in which I was intentional about focusing the conversation on representing our student body and parts of our community that we have not historically covered.

Parent Booster Club meetings

As the Editor-in-Chief, I am responsible for being a student advisor for the ODYSSEY Parent Booster Club. This means attending meetings, providing a student's perspective on potential fundraising plans and ensure I am up-to-date on all ODYSSEY income and expenses.

UGA football games

The ODYSSEY's major fundraising activity is working a concession stand at the UGA home football games. This is an opportunity to bond as a staff and work together to raise money for our program. As a member of the Leadership Team, it was my responsibility to set an example for the rest of the staff by working multiple games and stressing the importance of this fundraiser for the work we do in ODYSSEY.
