Abrams in Athens

I attended gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams' event in Athens and wrote news coverage of the event to inform readers who were unable to attend. Even in short news stories I am intentional about including a variety of voices to create the most balanced story possible, so I included quotes from Abrams, an organizer and multiple attendees.

Breaking: School Board announces choice for Clarke Central High School principal

I often write breaking news stories which require me to gather interviews, press releases, and research all in a few hours in order to get the story published the day of the event. In this case, I attended the Clarke County School District Board of Education meeting at which they announced the choice for the new principal of our school. I emailed teachers to get their thoughts, worked off of a press release, and ultimately got the article published the morning after the announcement.

A new face in the building

Even as the Editor-in-Chief, I have continued producing news coverage of our school. As EIC, I was assigned the Administrators beat, which required me to produce a news story about the CCHS Administrative Team every three weeks. I enjoyed this responsibility because it kept my writing skills in use, even as my primary responsibilities are editing and design. This is a story I wrote about our new Assistant Principal.

Sculpting a program

In my second semester as Editor-in-Chief, my beat is the art department. This is the first story I have written for that beat, and I was able to notice how much easier it was for me than beats in my freshman or sophomore years. News writing has become second nature and writing news briefs like this one are a simple, and even fun, process.

Candidates face off in community forum

For this story I attended a community forum held for local county commission and school board candidates to discuss issues important to voters. I was intentional about getting a variety of voices to include in my story -- a county commissioner, one of the organizers of the event, and multiple attendees. Coverage like this allows the community to be informed even when they are unable to attend the event.

Rising to STARdom

As a news staffer, I was responsible for writing a news brief for our website every week. This is an example of one of the news briefs I wrote, all of which were short enough to be easily consumed by readers online.

Avid Bookshop takes the "Rabbit Cake"

I worked with fellow ODYSSEY staffer Katie Grace Upchurch to cover this event which taught me a lot about co-writing an article and how to effectively work together in interviews and through the writing process.

Q & A with author Annie Hartnett

When we decided to cover the author event at Avid Bookshop, Katie Grace and I were able to set up an interview with the author, which we turned into a Q&A. In doing this, we were able to publish a more comprehensive coverage of the event rather than simply a news brief.
